Chicago city

Chicago city is the largest city in Illinois state and has a population of nearly three million people. Chicago is situated along the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan and is a major center of industry, culture, education, and transportation.

Chicago can be considered as the financial, and business, centre of the Midwest and was founded in 1833 to link the Great Lakes with the Mississippi River System. The name "Chicago" comes from the Algonquian word "Chigagou" meaning onion field.

Chicago city has been transformed with the influx of ethnic groups who brought diversity and city has started expanding. Areas such as South Loop, West Loop (Green Street), Wicker Park/Buck town, and others, have become posh areas and the run-down areas have become centers of business, and entertainment over the years.

The history of Chicago is closely tied with that of Lake Michigan. Since before Chicago was founded, ships were bringing people and supplies from all points on the compass. Lake Michigan is the third largest of the Great Lakes having a size slightly greater than the nation of Croatia. Scuba diving is a popular recreation for local residents, and also lakefront dinner cruises are popular. In the cost of living index Chicago ranks 7th with an index value of 110.1, where New York with an Index 175.5 and Atlanta with 100 rank first and tenth respectively.

Climate:

Like much of the Midwest, Chicago has a climate with a wide range of weather conditions. The city experiences four distinct seasons. In July, the warmest month, high temperatures average 84 °F (29 °C) and low temperatures 63 °F (17 °C).

Tourism in Chicago:

Many are not aware that the Ferris wheel, Lincoln Logs, and Tinker toys were Chicago inventions. For tourists from with the United States and from outside the city is geared up for summer with many interactive events, performances, demonstrations, tours and exhibits as summer starts from June 1 and ends on September 30. According to available statistics Thirty-three million foreign and domestic visitors came to Chicago in 2005. People throng Magnificent Mile which has thousands of restaurants. Chicago with its great architecture has been attracting millions of tourists over the years. Over the years the city has developed as a convention hub also in the United States, and are famously held at McCormick Place, just south of Soldier Field. Navy Pier, pier housing restaurants, shops, museums, exhibition halls, auditoriums, located north of Grant Park on the lakefront, and is one of the most visited landmarks in the Midwest.

The Chicago Cultural Center, which houses the city's Visitor Information Center, galleries, and exhibit halls, is a famous tourist destination.

Millennium Park is one such attraction for visitors which includes the original sculpture Cloud Gate (known locally as The Bean). Millennium Park also contains a restaurant with an outdoor seating section. It gets transformed into an ice skating rink in the winter season. Near the pavilion's stage is the Harris Theater for Music and Dance, an indoor venue for mid-sized performing arts companies.
